Laminated root rot spreading through trees in Mill Creek

MILL CREEK, Wash. — The Mill Creek Community Association is knocking down all trees within a fifty-foot radius of any tree infected with laminated root rot.

Many are sky-high Douglas Firs that have been there for decades. It’s estimated 50 trees in total will need to come down.

Association Director, Hilary Bublitz backs the decision.

She said, if these trees aren’t taken care of, homeowners will be at risk. Trees infected with the pathogen become hollowed, their roots are weakened, and are, therefore, more prone to falling over.

“It’s a very upsetting thing that’s happening,” said Bublitz. “What we cannot do is ignore it and hope it goes away.”

According to Bublitz, laminated root rot was first detected following the big windstorm of this past fall.

An arborist was hired by the neighborhood group to take a core sample from a tree that had toppled. They sent that sample to Oregon State University and scientists confirmed it had indeed contracted the pathogen.

We had the pleasure recently to help Mill creek community association remove over 50 hazardous trees. Laminated root rot is a disease that attacks the root structure of evergreen trees compromising them and causing the to fail pre maturely. it is spread though the root systems and will travel from one tree to the next. this was a very close quarters project with lots of potential hazards. we were able to successfully remove all trees and debris and upon arborist inspection of completion stop the further spread of disease. project was completed safely and the logs were able to be sent for saw logs at a local mill.

Working in a well landscaped golf course requires a special attention to detail to ensure as little impact as possible. they pose many obstacles such as irrigation lines, limited access and maintained golf course grass. over the years we've had the opportunity to complete many golf course projects such as Everett golf and country club and Mill creek country club, and many others.
